Travelers is a good fit for drivers interested in full coverage auto insurance at an affordable price. Its new car replacement is also a big draw, as it's more generous than what many of its competitors offer. Check out our full Travelers auto insurance review to learn about its benefits and drawbacks.

Coverage

Policy types

  • Auto
  • Boat and yacht
  • Motorcycle

Travelers is missing several common types of vehicle insurance, including RV and ATV/UTV coverage. But this shouldn't concern those who are only looking for auto insurance or a home and auto bundle.

Coverage types

  • Accident forgiveness
  • Bodily injury liability
  • Collision
  • Comprehensive
  • Gap
  • Medical payments
  • Named non-owner insurance
  • New car replacement
  • Personal injury protection (PIP)
  • Property damage liability
  • Rental car
  • Ridesharing
  • Roadside assistance
  • Underinsured motorist
  • Uninsured motorist

Travelers offers all the standard coverages as well as several optional ones. Currently, it only offers its ridesharing endorsement in two states. Drivers interested in this option may have to consider another insurance provider.

Travelers auto insurance offers some popular optional endorsements like gap insurance, roadside assistance, and accident forgiveness. And its new car endorsement is better than most of its peers. If someone totals their new car in the first five years, Travelers will pay to replace it with a new car of the same make and model. Most other carriers limit this insurance coverage to one to three years, so a full five years of new car replacement stands out.

Customer service and ratings

Travelers does not receive many customer complaints, which helps to give this car insurance company a solid rating with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). However, the J.D. Power U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study tells a different story. Travelers fell below the industry average for customer satisfaction in nearly every region it appeared in. It also fared worse than many of its competitors, including:

It received similarly lackluster ratings in J.D. Power's U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study.

Other insurance available

  • Travelers business insurance
  • Travelers condo insurance
  • Travelers homeowners insurance
  • Travelers jewelry and valuable items insurance
  • Travelers landlord insurance
  • Travelers pet insurance
  • Travelers renters insurance
  • Travelers travel insurance
  • Travelers umbrella insurance
  • Travelers wedding and events insurance

Travelers' selection of insurance policies is broader than many of its competitors. Options like travel and wedding insurance are pretty rare among top insurers. So it's an excellent choice for those interested in bundling these policies with other types of insurance.

When looking for great customer service: State Farm shines where Travelers auto insurance doesn't when it comes to customer satisfaction scores. It received above-average scores in J.D. Power's latest survey. However, it doesn't offer new car replacement.

When trying to keep costs down: Geico is one of the most popular insurers for drivers who are trying to keep costs down. Its policies are known for being affordable, and there are many discounts available to help drivers save. But it's missing some of the rare additional coverage options, like new car replacement, which is something drivers will find with Travelers.

Travelers auto insurance summary

Travelers is best suited for drivers who:

  • Have a new car and want new car replacement coverage
  • Prefer to manage their auto insurance traditionally through an agent or by calling their carrier
  • Look for rare coverage options, like gap and ridesharing coverage

But young drivers looking to save money may want to consider Geico or State Farm if great customer satisfaction scores are an important factor to them.
