HYSA vs. CD in August 2026: Which One Pays More Right Now?
Here's the short version: right now, it's basically a tie. Both the best high-yield savings accounts and the best CDs are paying APYs somewhere in the 3.00% to 4.00% range.
You can find a few outliers offering a touch higher APYs. For example Barclays is offering a 9 Mo. CD with a 4.15% APY. A few high-yield accounts have promo rates if you meet certain deposit criteria also.
Since there's no huge difference between the rates, the real winner for your money is more about flexibility and access.
The best CD rates in August 2026
The highest CD rates right now hover around 4.00% APY, and are typically shorter term lengths.
Barclays Online CDs and Western Alliance Bank CDs from Raisin are stand outs right now, with some of the strongest offers on 6-months, 9-month, and 1-year terms.

Locking your money into a CD makes sense when you know you won't touch the cash. If you deposit $10,000 in a 1-year CD near 4.00% APY, you'd earn $400, guaranteed, even if rates fall next month.
The catch is early withdrawal penalties. If you pull the money out before the term ends it'll cost you a few months of interest (or more).
Top savings account rates in August 2026

Barclays Tiered Savings rewards savers with a tiered APY structure, offering higher rates as your balance grows. No monthly fees and no minimum balance to open mean it's accessible to everyone, while unlimited transfers and withdrawals let you manage your savings your way.
A savings account is a better option for money you need access to at any moment. For example, I keep my emergency fund in a savings account because I need it ASAP if a disaster pops up.
What about T-bonds?
For anyone looking to lock up money for 2+ years, you might want to consider Treasury bonds.
Rates move daily, so I can't promise a specific yield. But right now rates are north of 4.00% on many multi-year terms, and even close to 5.00% on some decade-plus terms.
The tradeoff is time. You're tying up the money for the long haul, and selling early means taking whatever price the secondary market gives you. But for cash you truly won't need, that might be a fair trade.
The easiest way to buy T-bonds is through a brokerage account, so your bonds sit right alongside your other investments.
The bottom line
The best CDs and high-yield savings accounts are offering rates between 3.00% to 4.00% right now. A handful of online banks have open promotions with slightly higher rates that might be worth a look.
Beyond the APY, the right account comes down to access. Never lock money into a CD if there's a chance you'll need it early -- that's exactly what a savings account is for. If you won't touch it, a CD hands you a guaranteed rate for the entire term.
