Full Webull review

Webull combines affordable trading with a more robust feature set than its closest competitors. It's especially ideal for technical traders. Beginners can make use of Webull's educational content and the app's Lite mode, which make investing easier to learn.

We tried it: Our team's experience

Here at The Motley Fool Ascent, we pride ourselves as real users of most of the products across our site. Motley Fool Bureau Chief Sharice Wells uses Webull -- here's her take on this broker:

Sharice's review

I've had my Webull trading account for three years and primarily do my trading in the mobile app. I love that the app allows you to check your individual account's risk level based on your investments. Beyond the risk assessment component, it's pretty similar to other platforms I've used. It could be worthwhile for people seeking to buy OTC and fractional shares.

Webull offers many investment types and a few brokerage account types. To trade crypto, you must download a separate Webull Crypto app.

Commissions and fees

Webull charges $0 for basic transactions and per-transaction fees for advanced ones. One standout perk is Webull doesn't charge per-contract options fees on regular options trades. In the brokerage universe, that's uncommon.

Reason Cost
Stock and ETF trades $0
Foreign over-the-counter (OTC) stock trades $5 per buy, $0.05 per sell
Options trades $0
Index options trades $0.55 per contract
Futures trades $0.25 to $1.50 per contract

Margin rates

Webull doesn't offer the best rates we've seen, but they're some of the best in the business. Many brokers give you rates in the double-digits. Webull keeps them relatively low.

Balance Margin rate
$0 to $25,000 9.74%
$25,001 to $100,000 9.24%
$100,001 to $250,000 8.74%
$250,001 to $500,000 8.24%
$500,001 to $1,000,000 7.24%

More than $3,000,000 5.74%

Webull Promotions

Webull sometimes offers promotions that could save you money. Click below to go to our dedicated page covering current Webull promotions:

Research and education

Webull offers both research and education through its desktop platforms and mobile app.

Webull Learn offers more than 500 how-to-invest courses. Courses are a mix of short videos and written articles. They cover everything from money market funds to CME group futures. These topics might appeal to beginners or advanced investors.

All Webull trading platforms offer quant and analyst ratings, so you can get an immediate grasp of a range of professional opinions. You can also get technical reports on mobile and desktop (not the web platform). But Webull lacks in-depth research reports that drill down to company fundamentals, a feature that many long-term investors leverage to evaluate stocks.

Webull offers paper trading on all platforms. It's an uncommon perk among mobile apps. It lets you practice trading without putting real money at stake.

You can tap on the Feeds tab in the Webull app to discuss investing with other investors. It's a great way to tap into the broader community and get questions answered. Though, like all social media platforms, the quality of posts will vary.

Interface

Webull offers you three platforms. Each has a unique interface.

Webull Desktop gives you access to a full-featured desktop platform. Perks include personalized widgets, advanced charting, and in-depth analysis. Though Webull calls it intuitive, beginner investors may find the desktop platform overwhelming. But advanced investors may enjoy the flexibility Webull Desktop offers.

Webtrade is a limited version of Webull Desktop. It's optimized for equities and options trades. Unlike the desktop and mobile platforms, there's no download required to use.

The Webull mobile app is just as full-featured as Webull Desktop. It offers a wealth of charts, research, and customizability. You can trade everything Webull offers. There are minor differences, such as a few less charts and the addition of Sage tracker, but the difference is minor.

Perhaps the biggest differentiator is Webull Lite. Webull Lite is a mode for beginner investors or investors who trade simply. It turns off the fluff, cleaning up your interface.

Webull has options for both beginners and advanced investors, on mobile and desktop.

App

One of Webull's biggest strengths is its highly rated app-based investment platform.

The company's mobile app currently has a 4.3 out of 5-star rating on the Google Play store and a 4.7 out of 5 on the Apple App Store. The platform offers many features active traders may find useful. These include excellent charting tools, complex trade orders, and a feature-packed stock screener. Unlike some competitors, Webull lets you sell stocks short.

From the app, you can participate in extended-hours trading from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST. Webull's desktop trading platform has the same features, but to be clear, this is a mobile-first broker.

Customer service

Webull customer reviews are mixed. Common complaints on Trustpilot include issues withdrawing money and customer service getting worse. Reviews indicate that users enjoy being able to make advanced trades, but find the app more confusing than competitors.

You can contact Webull a couple ways:

Security

Webull is a safe place to put your money. Webull insures your accounts with the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). It offers up to $500,000 in total coverage, with a $250,000 limit for cash. Webull uses bank-level encryption to protect your information. This is all fairly standard as far as brokerage security goes.

About

Webull, a fintech company, was launched in 2017 by a former Alibaba employee. While it's registered in the U.S., it's actually owned by a Chinese holding company.

The app is popular and growing. By 2020, it'd gathered over 11 million registered users and were seeing about 750,000 daily active users.

But, Webull has faced some challenges recently. In 2024, U.S. states scolded it for data privacy concerns and potential ties to the Chinese government. This led to Tennessee banning the app on government devices in June 2024.

Webull has grown rapidly. It's now navigating some regulatory issues as it continues to expand. Some of its closest competitors include Robinhood and SoFi Invest, both mobile apps that offer commission-free stock trading and other perks.
