Full Consumers Credit Union Platinum Visa Card review
This credit card is a good fit for: Those who want to pay off debt or avoid high APR.
Top perks
If you want to get out of credit card debt -- or finance a big purchase -- the Consumers Credit Union Platinum Visa Card could be right for you. Here's what this card has to offer.
Intro 0% APR
For 12 months, you'll pay zero interest on new purchases and balance transfers. Perfect for those who want to pay down debt or who are expecting a big purchase and don't want to pay high interest.
Lower-than-average regular APR
A good credit score could land you a low APR after your 0% period ends. Since APRs are subject to change, check out Consumer Credit Union's schedule for the most current Platinum Visa card rates.
What could be improved
TheCCU Platinum Visa has some good perks, but it's not well suited for everyone. Here are some weaknesses you should be aware of.
No sign-up bonus
Unlike some credit cards, the Consumers Credit Union Platinum Visa Card doesn't have a lucrative sign-up bonus, like earning $200 after spending $3,000 in the first several months. The only bonus is the 0% intro APR period.
0% period could be longer
While 12 months of 0% intro APR isn't bad, it's also not the longest we've ever seen. Some cards will offer up to 18 months, and sometimes even longer, for balance transfers.
Balance transfer fees
You'll pay $5 or 3.00% of the transfer amount, whichever is greater, as an upfront fee. So for every $1,000 you transfer, you'll pay $30. While balance transfer fees are pretty typical, having that extra tacked on when trying to transfer and pay off debt is still a bummer.
Suggested credit score
You should have good to excellent credit, or a FICO® score of at least 670 when you apply for the Consumers Credit Union Platinum Visa Card. While you might get approved with a lower credit score, you'll need to have some compensating factors, like a higher income or low debt, to balance out the low score.
The Consumers Credit Union Platinum Visa Card is right for you if:
You want a balance transfer credit card with 12 months of .
You're a member of Consumers Credit Union and want to keep all your accounts in one place.
Our credit card methodology
At The Motley Fool Ascent, we rate credit cards on a five-star scale (1 = poor, 5 = best). Our rating criteria includes rewards rates, welcome bonuses, fees, and perks like travel credits and 0% intro APR offers to evaluate our ratings.
We combine these factors with an evaluation of brand reputation and customer satisfaction to ensure you're getting the best card recommendations. Learn more about how The Ascent rates credit cards.
FAQs
Both cards offer many of the same perks. The difference is that Platinum Rewards will earn 1 point for every $1 you spend, while Platinum doesn't earn rewards.
It doesn't have an annual fee. But it does charge a cash advance fee (5% of the total cash advance) and a balance transfer fee ($5 or 3.00% of the transfer amount, whichever is greater).
First, join the Consumers Cooperative Association (Consumers Credit Union will reimburse the one-time $5 fee). Through this association, you'll then qualify to join Consumers Credit Union.
