Full TD Double Up Credit Card review

This credit card is a good fit for: Consumers who want a high cash back rate and solid welcome bonus without having to worry about rotating spending categories.

Top perks

The TD Double Up Credit Card is designed to be a great cash back rewards credit card for everyday use. Here are some of the main benefits of using the card.

High rewards rate with no limits

The TD Double Up Credit Card offers a 2% cash back rewards rate on all purchases with no caps or limitations. This is among the highest flat-rate cash back percentages in the industry, especially with no limitations or special requirements.

Great for balance transfers

The TD Double Up Credit Card offers new customers a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for the first 15 billing cycles after opening an account. While balance transfers have a fee of $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, this could still save you significant money on interest if you move your existing credit card balances to your TD Double Up Credit Card.

Welcome bonus

While it isn't the best welcome bonus in the industry, the TD Double Up Credit Card offers $100 cash back after meeting a relatively low $1,000 spending threshold within the first 90 days of opening an account.

What could be improved

As mentioned, no credit card is perfect, so here are some of the potential drawbacks to keep in mind.

No bonus categories

To be fair, the 2% cash back reward rate of the TD Double Up Credit Card is among the highest in the industry, but some consumers would do better to find cards with higher rates in certain categories where they spend the most. There are cards with 3%-6% reward rates on categories such as groceries, gas, and travel, so if you spend a lot of money in any given spending category, it could be worth looking into a few alternatives.

Some high fees

The TD Double Up Credit Card doesn't have an annual fee, but it does have some fees that are on the higher end of the spectrum. The balance transfer fee of $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, is on par with peers, but a 5% (minimum $10) cash advance fee is on the high end. There's a 3% foreign transaction fee, which makes the card not ideal for those who travel internationally often. And for late payments or returned payments, TD charges $40.

Suggested credit score

The TD Double Up Credit Card is designed for customers who have an average FICO® Score or better, which can be thought of as about 700. Having said that, there are several other factors used in credit card approvals, such as your income, employment situation, and other debts. It's entirely possible to get approved with a lower FICO® Score, and it's possible to not get approved with an above average FICO® Score.

The TD Double Up Credit Card is right for you if:

The TD Double Up could be a great fit for you if you don't want to worry about spending categories, and simply want a no annual fee credit card that gives you a solid rewards rate on all eligible spending.

Our credit card methodology

At The Motley Fool Ascent, we rate credit cards on a five-star scale (1 = poor, 5 = best). Our rating criteria includes rewards rates, welcome bonuses, fees, and perks like travel credits and 0% intro APR offers to evaluate our ratings.

We combine these factors with an evaluation of brand reputation and customer satisfaction to ensure you're getting the best card recommendations. Learn more about how The Ascent rates credit cards.

FAQs

  • The TD Double Up Credit Card has one of the best cash back rewards rates for purchases, and without any limitations. It also has a solid balance transfer offer as well as a welcome bonus for new cardholders.

  • While the TD Double Up Credit Card doesn't have an annual fee, there are some fees you should know about. There's a balance transfer fee of $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, a 5% cash advance fee, and a foreign transaction fee of 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars. Plus, there's a $40 fee for late or returned payments, which is on the high end of the spectrum.
