Wells Fargo cards have an auto rental collision damage waiver. It reimburses you if a covered accident or theft occurs to the rental car. So, if the car is damaged or stolen, you could file a claim with your Wells Fargo insurance.
To be eligible for coverage, you must use your Wells Fargo card (or rewards earned on that card) to pay for the full cost of the car rental. You also need to decline the optional collision loss and damage insurance from the insurance company.
Coverage with most Wells Fargo cards applies to rentals with a rental period of up to 15 days in the United States and up to 31 days outside the United States. If you rent a car for longer than that, then Wells Fargo's auto rental insurance won't cover it. The Bilt Mastercard® is the exception -- it also covers rentals of up to 31 days, instead of 15 days, in the United States.
The coverage maximum is $50,000. Wells Fargo credit card rental car coverage will reimburse you for any of the following in the event of a covered accident or theft:
- The cost to repair the rental car or its actual cash value, whichever is less
- Reasonable towing expenses to the nearest repair facility
- The loss of use of the rental car
- Any additional fees or taxes
What's not covered
There are situations when Wells Fargo's car rental insurance doesn't apply. Here's what isn't covered:
- You or an authorized driver use the car in a way that goes against the rental agreement. Examples include reckless driving or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- The rental car is used as a car for hire, such as driving it for Uber or Lyft.
- You or an authorized driver fail to take responsible care of the rental car.
- You rent a car through a car-sharing platform that allows people to rent out their cars. For example, if you rent a car through Turo, that's not eligible for rental car coverage.
This insurance also doesn't cover certain types of vehicles, including exotic vehicles, antique vehicles, vehicles with an open cargo bed, and vans (except those designed as small-group transportation vehicles that seat up to nine people, including the driver).
