Full Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card review

This credit card is a good fit for: Travelers who value achieving Aeroplan 25K Elite Status with Air Canada and who can put the two flight reward certificates to good use.

Top perks

These are the top highlights of the Aeroplan® Credit Card.

Nice sign-up bonus

The Aeroplan® Credit Card has a unique welcome offer: Earn up to 100,000 bonus points – 75,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open. Plus, 25,000 points after you spend $20,000 on purchases in the first 12 months..

Elite Status perks for new cardmembers

You'll automatically achieve Aeroplan 25K Elite Status as a new cardholder. This perk is valid for the calendar year you open your account and for the following calendar year.

If you fly with Air Canada, the benefits offered with this status level can make your travel more enjoyable. Some of the most notable benefits include:

  • Priority seat selection, check-in, and boarding
  • Two complimentary checked bags
  • 20 eUpgrade credits
  • 50% discount on preferred seats
  • Two one-time-use Maple Leaf Lounge passes

Earn up to 3 points per $1 in multiple spending categories

This card lets you earn rewards for your spending in multiple spending categories, which can help you maximize your earning potential.

With the Aeroplan® Credit Card, you can earn:

  • 3 points per $1 on dining (including takeout and delivery)
  • 3 points per $1 on grocery purchases
  • 3 points per $1 on purchases made directly with Air Canada
  • 1 point per $1 on other purchases

Earn 500 points for every $2,000 spent on purchases each month

The Aeroplan® Credit Card also offers a spending bonus. You can earn 500 bonus points for every $2,000 you spend in a calendar month, capped at 1,500 bonus points each month.

Free first checked bag perks

This credit card also includes checked bag perks. As the primary cardholder, you and up to eight companions traveling on the same itinerary can bring one free first checked bag on Air Canada flights. While the Elite Status you'll earn as a new cardmember entitles you to two free checked bags, this is a nice benefit if you frequently travel with others.

$100 statement credit for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS

Many travel credit cards now include statement credits for specific expedited travel programs. The Aeroplan® Credit Card is no exception.

With this card, you'll get up to $100 in statement credit as reimbursement for the application fee for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS. This benefit is available once every four years. You must use your Aeroplan® Credit Card to pay the application fee to use this perk.

Travel protection benefits

This travel card includes these helpful travel protection benefits:

  • Baggage delay insurance
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance
  • Trip delay reimbursement
  • Auto rental collision damage waiver
  • Roadside assistance

Most travel credit cards at this price point include similar perks, and you may find these benefits helpful if you encounter difficulties on your trips.

No foreign transaction fees

No foreign transaction fees are charged when using this credit card to make international purchases. Cards that have this fee charge around 3% for every foreign transaction. If you plan to use this card abroad, this perk can offer money savings.

What could be improved

The Aeroplan® Credit Card has some minor concerns worth noting.

Annual fee

It's worth noting that this rewards card has an annual fee of $95. When considering the card's many benefits, this is a reasonable yearly fee, and the price is in line with other travel credit cards we've seen. But it's still an additional expense to think about.

Learn more: Best No Annual Fee Credit Cards

Earning cap on spending bonus

You can get 500 bonus points on every $2,000 you spend each month with this card, but there's an earning cap. You can only earn up to 1,500 bonus points per calendar month. If you typically put more than $6,000 per month on your cards, a different card with no earning cap may make sense.

Limitations on how you can redeem points

The Aeroplan® Credit Card has limitations on how you can redeem your points. At this time, you can redeem your points for Air Canada flights or flights with one of Air Canada's many partner airlines.

Chase has announced that soon you'll be able to redeem your points for other travel purchases through Chase's Pay Yourself Back program at a rate of $0.0125 per point. But this redemption option isn't available yet for this credit card.

Suggested credit score

This credit card is intended for consumers with good to excellent credit. Applicants for the Aeroplan® Credit Card should aim for a FICO® Score of 670 or higher. Other factors are also considered, such as income and current debt. It's possible to get approved with a lower credit score -- or be denied with a higher score.

The Aeroplan® Credit Card is right for you if:

This card could be a great fit for you if you like the idea of earning Elite Status with Air Canada and think you will put the two flight reward certificates to use.

You may also want to apply for this card if these things are true for you:

  • You want to travel to destinations that Air Canada or its partners fly to
  • You can meet the minimum spend requirements to earn the flight reward certificates
  • You like the idea of a fast track to Aeroplan 25k Elite Status
  • You typically spend on Air Canada travel, restaurants, and groceries
  • You can afford the annual fee

But if you don't see yourself flying with Air Canada, want a more flexible welcome offer, or don't want an airline-branded card, then another travel rewards card may be a better option for you.

Our credit card methodology
