Top perks

Affordable premiums

Plymouth Rock auto insurance offers some pretty reasonable rates, even for young drivers and those with an accident history. However, individual drivers' rates vary depending on their accident history, vehicle make and model, address, and more.

Unique coverage options

Plymouth Rock offers several unique policy endorsements, including coverage for accidental airbag discharges, electronic key replacement, and a waiver of deductible option. There's also a Get Home Safe option, included standard with all policies, which pays for the cost of a cab or rideshare if a policyholder doesn't feel comfortable driving. Some of these policy perks are available individually while others are only available as part of a package, but there are several packages to choose from.

Rewards for loyal customers

Members of a qualifying auto club or those who have had Plymouth Rock auto insurance for at least four policy terms qualify for Assurance Plus Loyalty Rewards at no extra charge. These include laptop and mobile device replacement coverage, pet injury protection, child car seat replacement, and loss of earnings and bail bond coverage, among other things.

Road Rewards program

Safe drivers should consider enrolling in Plymouth Rock's Road Rewards program. Drivers download a phone app that monitors their driving habits. Safe driving earns rewards points which they can redeem for movie tickets, gift cards, and more.

What could be improved

Limited availability

Plymouth Rock auto insurance is currently only available in the six states of New England. Those in other states will have to explore other auto insurers.

Poor customer service

The company fared poorly in J.D. Power's most recent U.S. Auto Insurance Study. It's also had more complaints filed against it with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) than many of its competitors. It's something to weigh when choosing an insurer, but it doesn't mean all customers have bad experiences.

Few discounts

Plymouth Rock offers fewer auto insurance discounts than many of its competitors. However, given that it has pretty affordable rates to begin with, this may not bother many drivers.

Drivers who want an easily customizable policy with great customer service: State Farm offers car insurance policies in all 50 states, and is known for great customer service. It offers a number of endorsements to help drivers customize their policies, but it lacks some of Plymouth Rock's most unusual protections. It also doesn't have loyalty rewards.

Drivers who care about an affordable rate, first and foremost: Geico is known for providing affordable car insurance to residents of all 50 states, and it offers a plethora of discounts. But it doesn't give drivers as many ways to customize their policy.

Monthly premiums costs

Plymouth Rock offers pretty affordable rates for all the driver profiles we looked at. The table below shows average annual premium costs for four different profiles.

Discounts available

  • Paid in full
  • Multi-car
  • Motor club
  • Student away at school
  • Companion policy (multi-policy)

Plymouth Rock offers fewer auto insurance discounts than many of its competitors. However, this doesn't stop its rates from being competitive.

Coverage options

Policy types

  • Personal auto
  • Commercial auto
  • Motorcycle
  • Motorhome
  • Boat and watercraft
  • Collector car

Plymouth Rock offers most of the vehicle insurance policies that its competitors offer. The only one that's missing is ATV/UTV coverage, but this omission shouldn't bother many customers.

Coverage types

  • Bodily injury liability
  • Property damage liability
  • Uninsured motorist
  • Underinsured motorist
  • Personal injury protection (PIP)
  • Medical payments

  • Accident forgiveness
  • Full glass coverage
  • Additional rental coverage
  • Mobile device replacement
  • Laptop replacement
  • Child car seat replacement
  • Enhanced bail bond coverage
  • Loss of earnings coverage
  • Waiver of deductible

Plymouth Rock's list of optional auto insurance protections is much longer than that of most competitors. A few of these benefits are only available to members of its Assurance Plus program, while others require that drivers purchase a package of benefits. But there are also several a la carte options.

Customer service and ratings

Though it seems like its many perks would create a happy and loyal customer base, Plymouth Rock's customer reviews tell a different story.

It scored well below average in J.D. Power's U.S. Auto Insurance study, and its complaint ratio with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is a little above average. However, it retains an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

This auto insurer is best for:

  • New England residents looking to score an affordable rate on car insurance
  • Drivers interested in rewards for safe driving and loyalty
  • Drivers who want to customize a policy with unique protections

Drivers who live outside Plymouth Rock's service area may want to consider Geico for cheap car insurance. And those who put a premium on customer service should give State Farm a closer look.
