For Better Results, Start in the Middle

Fools, are you ready to level up your AI skills? Today's two-part prompt bridges the gap between knowing what a company does and knowing what matters as you near a buy decision.
I call it my "bring me up to date" tool, and it was expressly designed to draw out the often dramatic tension between a business and its stock market value. It assumes you know at least a little about the company, but what you learn here comes from a view of a business in motion.
The instruction at its heart is simple: bring me up to date, starting with the now of the story and what got us here. Start in medias resβin the middle of thingsβthe way Homer begins the Iliad, or the way the showrunners craft that very first scene of Breaking Bad. From there the prompt isolates the relevant trends and value drivers, hunting for the handful of factors that will shape the company's valuation over a five-year period and beyond.
Part 1 produces an appendix; Part 2 turns it into an interactive valuation artifact. Both are grounded in expectations investing: what does today's price imply about the market's expectations for this business?
Fool Prompt 1: Where to Start
Part 1 looks long, but the output is very readable. The prompt zeroes in on the small group of factors holding up the price the market has assigned today. Those are the same factors most likely to break, which is exactly why you want to see them before you buy, not after.

More technical valuation mechanics may be concentrated in the expectations-analysis section.
A novice reader should be able to skip the more technical valuation mechanics and still understand:
- what is happening in the business
- why it matters
- what could drive future value creation
- what could undermine the thesis
- whether today's valuation appears demanding or undemanding
My intended holding period is at least five years, and I am willing to hold substantially longer when the company's competitive advantage, reinvestment opportunities, and return on incremental capital remain attractive. Do not treat five years as the endpoint of the investment thesis or valuation; use it as the minimum horizon over which the business case should make sense, while giving appropriate weight to developments that could extend or shorten the duration of value creation well beyond that period.
Pay particular attention to developments that could lengthen or shorten the duration of above-average growth and excess returns beyond the initial five-year forecast period.
I tend to be especially interested in situations where:
- revenue growth is durable, accelerating, or better than commonly appreciated
- free-cash-flow generation is strong or improving
- margins have structural upside
- operating leverage is emerging
- a new business, product, technology, customer group, geographic market, or industry transition could materially alter the growth algorithm
- the market may underestimate the duration or magnitude of reinvestment opportunities
- competitive advantage may be widening
- a company occupies an increasingly important position within a technology stack, ecosystem, supply chain, or industry transition
- current market expectations appear too pessimistic or too optimistic relative to likely business outcomes
- a stock that has fallen sharply may have experienced a change in sentiment greater than the deterioration in intrinsic business value
- a stock that has risen sharply may now require increasingly demanding assumptions to generate satisfactory future returns
I care less about whether a stock looks statistically cheap than about: What operating performance is required to justify today's valuation?
Approach valuation primarily as an expectations-investing exercise, inspired by the framework associated with Michael Mauboussin.
Do not simply ask: "What multiple should this company trade at?" Instead ask: "What future economic performance does today's market value require?"
RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS
Use current information. Establish what has happened through the most recent available quarter and up to today's date. Search broadly enough to understand both recent events and the underlying trajectory of the business.
Prioritize sources approximately in this order:
- SEC filings or equivalent regulatory filings
- company earnings releases
- investor presentations
- earnings-call transcripts
- company investor-relations materials
- reputable financial-data providers
- high-quality financial journalism and industry publications
- other sources where necessary
Clearly distinguish among:
- reported facts
- management guidance
- consensus expectations
- market-derived information
- your own interpretation or estimates
Look back approximately 12β24 months when useful to determine whether current developments represent:
- acceleration
- deceleration
- normalization
- cyclical fluctuation
- a genuine structural change in the business
Whenever practical, quantify important statements. Do not merely repeat management commentary.
Test management's claims against:
- reported financial performance
- segment results
- bookings
- backlog
- customer behavior
- margins
- cash flow
- capital intensity
- industry conditions
- competitive developments
- other available evidence
PART I -- BRING ME UP TO DATE
Begin with a concise investment narrative of approximately 3β6 paragraphs answering: What is happening at this company right now, and why should an investor care?
Write this as a connected narrative, not a chronological list of news items. After reading it, I should understand:
- how the business has performed recently
- whether its trajectory is improving, deteriorating, or changing
- what the market currently appears most focused on
- what you believe deserves more attention than it is receiving
- what has changed in the investment thesis
- whether the stock price has moved more or less than the underlying business
Use financial terminology when it adds precision, but make the economic meaning clear enough that an intelligent novice can follow the argument.
1. Business performance
Discuss the most recent quarter and year-to-date results. Focus on the metrics that matter economically for this specific company, including where relevant:
- revenue growth
- organic growth
- volume
- pricing
- bookings
- backlog
- ARR
- RPO
- customers
- users
- utilization
- gross margin
- operating margin
- incremental margins
- EPS
- operating cash flow
- free cash flow
- FCF conversion
- capital expenditures
- working capital
- ROIC
- balance-sheet changes
Where useful, compare the current trajectory with approximately one year ago.
Do not dump every available metric. Identify the metrics that explain the changing economics of the business.
2. Fundamental value drivers
Identify approximately 3β6 fundamental value drivers. For each driver explain:
- what is happening
- why it matters
- whether it is cyclical or structural
- evidence that it is strengthening or weakening
- how durable it may be
- which financial variables it ultimately affects
- whether the market appears to appreciate it properly
Possible examples include:
- end-market demand
- product cycles
- AI infrastructure spending
- semiconductor content growth
- advanced packaging
- installed-base growth
- aftermarket/service revenue
- recurring revenue
- pricing power
- software mix
- customer concentration
- production capacity
- supply chain normalization
- competitive share gains
- international expansion
- regulatory change
- acquisition integration
- operating leverage
- capital intensity
- ecosystem positioning
Do not use this list mechanically. Determine what actually drives this company.
3. What has changed in the thesis?
Explicitly divide developments into:
- Things that have improved
- Things that have deteriorated
- Things that remain unresolved
Focus especially on developments that could change:
- sustainable revenue CAGR
- normalized margins
- free-cash-flow conversion
- capital intensity
- ROIC
- competitive advantage
- the duration of the reinvestment runway
4. Competitive position
Briefly explain:
- the company's role in its industry
- major competitors
- sources of competitive advantage
- whether that advantage appears to be widening, narrowing, or unchanged
- any important technological or industry transitions that may alter its position
Pay particular attention to situations where the market may underestimate how a company's role in an emerging:
- technology stack
- ecosystem
- supply chain
- infrastructure architecture
- industry transition
could expand over time.
5. Stock performance versus business performance
Explain the recent share-price trajectory, especially:
- year to date
- since the most recent earnings report
- since any important recent peak or trough
Try to distinguish whether major stock-price movements appear driven primarily by:
- earnings revisions
- changes in long-term growth expectations
- margin expectations
- valuation multiple expansion or contraction
- sector or macro factors
- company-specific developments
- positioning or sentiment
- changes in perceived risk
Explicitly identify situations where:
- the stock has changed more than the business
- the business has changed more than the stock
PART II -- FORWARD INVESTMENT CASE
Move from reporting to interpretation.
6. Five-year-and-beyond opportunity
Identify the most important ways this company could become substantially more valuable over approximately the next five years and beyond. Treat this five-year period as a minimum investment-evaluation horizon, not as the assumed endpoint of value creation.
Focus only on opportunities large enough to materially affect:
- revenue growth
- margins
- free cash flow
- capital intensity
- ROIC
- competitive advantage
- the duration of the reinvestment runway
Rank opportunities implicitly by economic importance rather than producing an indiscriminate list. Where practical, estimate their possible scale.
Also identify opportunities that could materially extend the company's growth, reinvestment, or excess-return runway beyond the initial five-year period.
7. Thesis risks
Identify approximately 4β7 risks that could genuinely break or materially weaken the thesis. Avoid boilerplate risks. Explain the mechanism through which each risk would affect value.
Examples might include:
- structurally slower growth
- margin pressure
- technological displacement
- customer concentration
- excessive reinvestment
- slowing demand
- competition
- loss of pricing power
- regulation
- acquisition integration
- execution risk
- cyclical normalization
- shorter-than-expected competitive advantage duration
Distinguish between:
- Business risk
- Valuation / expectations risk
A superb company can still be a poor investment if today's stock price already assumes extraordinary execution.
Pay particular attention to risks that could shorten the duration of excess returns, even if they do not materially impair the next one or two years of reported earnings.
PART III -- IDENTIFY THE VALUATION PRESSURE POINTS
Before constructing the expectations analysis, identify approximately 3β6 assumptions that matter most to valuation. These should emerge directly from the business analysis.
Typical possibilities include:
- revenue CAGR
- duration of elevated growth
- target operating margin
- incremental margins
- gross-margin evolution
- reinvestment requirements
- sales-to-capital ratio
- incremental ROIC
- terminal ROIC
- WACC
- competitive advantage period
- terminal growth
- unit growth
- installed-base growth
- service mix
- recurring-revenue penetration
- customer growth
- ARPU
- capacity utilization
- acquisition-adjusted owner cash flow
- another company-specific driver
Do not blindly use the same variables for every company. The qualitative analysis and valuation framework must connect.
For example: If installed-base growth and aftermarket penetration drive the business, those should ultimately determine revenue growth, margins, and reinvestment assumptions. If AI-related content growth is the central thesis, expose that operating variable and translate it into financial economics. If advanced packaging exposure is the key opportunity, model how that affects revenue CAGR, margin structure, and capital requirements. If acquisitions are a recurring part of the growth engine, consider whether some portion of acquisition spending should be treated as economically necessary reinvestment rather than assuming reported free cash flow is fully distributable owner cash.
VALUATION PRESSURE POINT
Identify the single assumption or small group of assumptions where the current valuation leaves the least room for disappointment. Call this the: Valuation Pressure Point.
Examples:
- revenue growth must remain above 15% for unusually long
- margin expansion must reach a level materially above historical norms
- reinvestment efficiency must improve sharply
- elevated ROIC must persist for more than a decade
- acquisition spending must decline substantially for reported FCF to resemble owner earnings
- the stock is far more sensitive to margin realization than to revenue growth
Explain this clearly. When using technical concepts such as ROIC or competitive-advantage duration, also explain briefly why the variable matters economically.
PART IV -- EXPECTATIONS-BASED VALUATION
This section may be more technically detailed than the main investment narrative. A novice reader should be able to skip the mechanics of this section without losing the central investment thesis.
Begin with the latest available:
- share price
- valuation date
- diluted share count
- market capitalization
- cash
- debt
- other material financial claims or investments
- enterprise value where economically appropriate
- trailing or current-year revenue
- operating profit
- operating margin
- tax rate
- free cash flow
State the date associated with the market price.
8. Choose the appropriate valuation framework
Do not force every company into the same DCF structure. Select the framework that best reflects the company's economics.
For a conventional nonfinancial operating company, an FCFF framework may be appropriate: NOPAT = EBIT Γ (1 β cash tax rate); FCFF = NOPAT β required reinvestment.
Whenever practical, connect reinvestment to growth and capital efficiency rather than independently guessing free cash flow. Possible formulations include: Reinvestment = Change in Revenue / Sales-to-Capital, or approximately: Reinvestment Rate = Growth / ROIC, when economically appropriate.
However, adapt where necessary.
- Banks: use residual income, tangible book value, ROE, or excess-return economics.
- Insurers: use book value, ROE, distributable capital, or excess-return economics.
- REITs: use AFFO and/or NAV economics.
- Early stage biotechnology: use probability-adjusted product/pipeline economics.
- Commodity producers: use normalized commodity prices, cost curves, reserves, and production.
- Highly cyclical businesses: use normalized margins and cycle-aware assumptions.
- Acquisition-led businesses: consider whether reported FCF should be adjusted for recurring acquisition spending required to sustain the growth algorithm.
Regardless of methodology, preserve the central question: What future economic performance is today's stock price discounting?
9. Base expectations case
Construct a reasonable expectations-based valuation using current information. Show enough mechanics for the model to be understandable without turning the report into an accounting exercise.
At minimum, show the relevant economic building blocks for the selected framework. For a conventional operating company this may include:
- starting revenue
- revenue growth assumptions
- operating-margin progression
- operating profit
- NOPAT
- reinvestment
- free cash flow
- discount rate
- terminal assumptions
- enterprise value
- equity value
- value per share
Explain why each major assumption is economically reasonable. Where appropriate, use consensus expectations to anchor the first 1β3 years, but do not mechanically extrapolate consensus indefinitely.
Do not assume that the end of the initial five-year forecast period represents the end of differentiated economics. Explicitly model or discuss how growth; margins; ROIC; reinvestment opportunities; and competitive advantage evolve beyond year five.
Avoid economically inconsistent combinations such as permanently high growth; very high ROIC; and minimal reinvestment unless the company's actual economics justify them.
Do not introduce complexity merely to make the model appear sophisticated. The objective is to isolate the few assumptions driving valuation. Treat duration of excess returns as an explicit economic variable when it is important to valuation.
10. What is the market pricing in?
Reverse-solve the valuation framework. At today's share price, estimate the operating assumptions required to justify the current valuation.
Whenever practical, solve separately for variables such as:
- implied revenue CAGR
- implied target operating margin
- implied competitive advantage period
- implied duration of elevated growth
- implied reinvestment efficiency
- implied ROIC
- implied WACC or cost of equity
- implied acquisition-adjusted owner cash
- another company-specific driver
Do not suggest that investors literally hold one exact set of assumptions. Describe these instead as: economically equivalent expectation sets.
For example: "Holding the other assumptions constant, today's stock price can be justified by approximately 14% revenue growth for five years." Or: "Alternatively, somewhat slower growth could justify today's price if operating margins reach approximately 31%."
Tell me whether the embedded expectations appear: modest; reasonable; demanding; very demanding; or implausibly optimistic/pessimistic.
The preferred conclusion is not simply: "Fair value is $X." Instead: "At today's price, investors appear to need roughly X growth, Y margins, and Z years of elevated returns. Here is where I think those expectations may be too high or too low."
Give special attention to whether today's valuation depends more heavily on:
- unusually strong near-term operating assumptions
- the persistence of attractive economics far beyond the initial five-year forecast period
- unusually high reinvestment efficiency
- another company-specific economic assumption
11. Expected-return framing
Also work the valuation in the opposite direction. Using reasonable operating scenarios, estimate approximate five-year annualized shareholder returns under:
- Conservative case
- Base case
- Optimistic but plausible case
Avoid false precision. Explain whether prospective returns come primarily from:
- underlying business growth
- margin improvement
- free-cash-flow growth
- balance-sheet evolution
- capital allocation
- valuation multiple change
- another company-specific source
Treat the five-year return analysis as an investment checkpoint, not as an assumption that the investment must be exited or that differentiated value creation ends at year five.
PART V -- INVESTMENT SYNTHESIS
Finish the investor-facing report with a concise synthesis answering five questions.
1. What is getting better or worse? Identify the most important change in business trajectory.
2. What is the most underappreciated variable? Identify the factor the market may not be weighting correctly.
3. What does today's valuation require? Summarize the major embedded expectations. Explain the conclusion in plain English before, or alongside, any more technical valuation terminology. Explicitly address whether the valuation depends mainly on unusually strong near-term execution, the persistence of attractive economics over a much longer period, or another company-specific requirement.
4. Where is the greatest disagreement? Identify the largest gap between:
- market expectations
- reasonable business outcomes
- your interpretation of the evidence
5. What should I monitor? Identify approximately 2β4 developments or metrics over the next several quarters that would tell me whether the thesis is strengthening or weakening. Where appropriate, include developments that would indicate that the company's long-term competitive-advantage or reinvestment runway is becoming longer or shorter, even if near-term financial results remain strong.
Do not finish the investor-facing report with a generic bull/base/bear summary. I want a judgment about the relationship among: business quality + business trajectory + market expectations + prospective returns.
If the company is excellent but the valuation leaves little room for error, say so. If the shares look optically expensive but the market may underestimate the duration or magnitude of value creation, explain why. If the stock has fallen enough that expectations appear unusually undemanding relative to the company's underlying economics, explain that. If the evidence is genuinely ambiguous, say so.
APPENDIX -- MODELING HANDOFF FOR FOLLOW-UP INTERACTIVE TOOL
The Investment Synthesis above is the conclusion of the investor-facing report. The following section is a structured technical handoff for a subsequent interactive-model prompt. Do not introduce a new investment thesis, new valuation conclusion, or materially different assumptions here. Extract and organize the conclusions already established above.
Do not build the interactive model in this response.
Provide a concise but sufficiently complete Modeling Handoff that a subsequent prompt can use to construct an interactive expectations-based valuation model. The handoff should identify:
- Financial starting points: Include the relevant valuation date; current share price; diluted share count; market capitalization; cash; debt; enterprise value where appropriate; current-year or trailing revenue; margins; free cash flow; and other relevant financial anchors.

Above all: Make the investor-facing report tell one coherent investment story and make that story accessible without sacrificing analytical depth. After completing the Investment Synthesis, provide a structured Modeling Handoff that faithfully captures the assumptions and economic logic needed for the subsequent interactive valuation exercise.

The artifact should not merely reproduce a DCF. It should make the investment thesis interactive.
A user should be able to change the few assumptions about the business that matter most and immediately see:
- how those assumptions affect the company's economics
- how they affect valuation
- what expectations today's market price implies
- where the greatest risk of disappointment lies
Above all: Make the interactive model a quantitative continuation of the company analysis already completed. Preserve the same thesis, the same economic logic, and the same company-specific value drivers.
